The Founders

by Richard Brookhiser

Deism is not skepticism. (Hume was a skeptic, even to the striking of billiard balls. No founder that I am aware of embraced that position.)

It is true that the founders were deists–except when they weren’t. I devoted a chapter to their many thoughts on religion in What Would the Founders Do? For the complex way that Christianity played out in the life of one complex founder, read Gentleman Revolutionary.
