In the Senate, the last time the Republicans lost more than four seats was 1986, when they lost seven.

In the House, the last time the Republicans lost more than twenty seats was in 1982, when they lost 26 seats, in the midst of the country’s worst post-Great Depression recession. About half of those losses were due to redistricting. The last time they lost more than that was in 1974, when they lost 48.
