Apologia

Text

I haven’t seen Michael Richards on Letterman yet, but several people have emailed asking my thoughts on it, and of course others have commented here.  My observation is this: we’re spending way too much time these days fussing over apologies.  Whether it’s Richards, Gibson, or Kerry, the public apology is reviewed for sincerity and authenticity, and parsed for exact meaning.  Is Richards a racist?  Make your own guess, but I am quite sure we won’t find out much from the quality of his apology.  Personally, I believe that the only real apology a man can offer is to change.   And of course, there are others who believe real men don’t apologize.
