Re: one cheer for the isg?

Jonah, you’re absolutely right. The ISG’s military recommendations are stay the course, at least the course as preferred by Rumsfeld, Abizaid, and Casey: do more training, draw down our forces, and avoid classic counter-insurgency tactics. If your theory is that our “footprint” is what’s causing the violence in Iraq (Rummy, Abizaid, and Casey), or that we’ve lost and need to make a graceful exit (probably a lot of the members of the ISG), this strategy makes some sense. If you still want to try to change security conditions in Iraq, it makes no sense. Which is why rejecting the ISG’s military recommendations, firing Rumsfeld, and probably forcing aside Abizaid and Casey (as we recommend in this editorial) all go together.
