The Corner

The one and only.

I have a new story up on social conservatives and Mitt Romney.  A number of conservatives in South Carolina, certainly a key state in the 2008 race, are viewing Romney with some skepticism after news of remarks he made in recent years about abortion, gay rights, and Ronald Reagan.  (On Reagan, Romney in 1994 objected to being connected to former president, saying in his debate with Ted Kennedy, “I was an independent during the time of Reagan-Bush. I’m not trying to return to Reagan-Bush.”)  Quotes from Romney — some from ‘94, some much more recent — are flying around in e-mails between conservative groups.  Right now, conservatives are trying to sort it all out, but there seems to be agreement that Romney has repair work to do.
