Jonah, you’re right, of course, that “nativist” is just an epithet applied to any policy the open-borders crowd dislikes. But it’s not comparable to the eugenics vs. dysgenics discussion — the argument is that genetic manipulation you disapprove of is described as “eugenics” (which is what Wesley Smith seems to have done), whereas genetic manipulation that you approve of needs another name, maybe “gene therapy,” or something equally anodyne. The reason the parallel doesn’t work for immigration is that there are no categories of immigration the open-borders crowd would agree to eliminate, and no serious enforcement initiative they would genuinely approve of, that would then require some label more acceptable than “nativist.”
