Subject: Bush as commander-in-chief

One earnestly hopes that today Dave Petraeus is reading and heeding Ralph Peters and Victor Davis Hanson.

Likewise, one hopes that Petraeus is not overly invested personally in FM 3-24, at the expense of the execution of Hanson’s eight priorities! We need to win in Iraq, not Vietnam!!

ME: I read and enjoyed both VDH and Peters, but I don’t find them entirely persuasive. (Needless to say, they know much more about military affairs than I ever will). Trying to secure Baghdad is going to involve lots of patrolling and policing (which VDH warns against)and lots of negotiations and compromise (which Peters warns against), just inevitably. If we could win by sheer aggression and offense, this would be a much easier proposition–like the initial invasion.
