I’m late weighing in on this, but my bottom line on it is something we say in the editorial today. The key thing is that Bush is still committed to winning, is putting population security front and center, and will have a general on the ground, Petraeus, who believes in the strategy. It might be that the exact approach the administration has in mind at the moment is not quite right, but I’m confident Petraeus will have the flexibility he needs to try to work it out on the ground, and–just as important–will get the resources he needs. As many others have said, the key thing now is making it work. Whether it will, I don’t know, but the strategy makes sense and has a better chance of working than anything else on offer.
