Re: Anti-Americanism

Text

Jonah, I think that University of Michigan professor’s article massively overstates the case.  Anti-Americanism is certainly a fashion trend, and saying nice things about America is considered the height of vulgarity in Europe, just as saying anything nice about Bush is considered obscene on the Upper West Side.  But fashion is fashion.  Nothing will ever make the French agree with the English, and as the English grow more anti-American, we are sure to gain allies on the Continent.  The coming election of Nicolas Sarkozy in France (cross your fingers) may well signal a long period of Atlanticist orientation in France.  Add to that the fact that public opinion in most major European countries is more hawkish against Iran, etc., than opinion among Democratic voters in the U.S., and things don’t really look that bad.
