Rich: You’re right that it makes sense for Brownback to try to tear down Romney. But that’s another way of saying, isn’t it, that the logic of Brownback’s candidacy militates in favor of tearing down whoever is currently closest to him ideologically and ahead of him in the race? If you assume that he can’t win the nomination–a premise that his supporters and he obviously reject, or have to say that they reject–then it follows that the more successful his candidacy proves, the further away from his positions the eventual nominee will be.
