“Mainstream” Positions on Abortion
Determining whether Giuliani’s position on abortion is “mainstream” would require knowing what it is, and it’s a bit of a moving target at this point. His position until a few days ago–for keeping partial-birth abortion legal, for taxpayer funding–was a minority position in the populace at large, and a small minority among Republicans. His current position–against partial-birth abortion, against federal funding, for legal abortion in many cases, cagey on Roe–could reasonably be called a mainstream position. But so could McCain’s and Romney’s, at least insofar as they want to ban most abortions. Wanting to ban abortions under most circumstances is a mainstream position, too.
