The Wonderful Prof. Lewis
In his very learned talk at the AEI dinner last night, Bernard Lewis reminded his audience of many truths that tend to get obscured by the Western world’s self-hatred – for example, the fact that the Crusades (for which we apologize on a regular basis) were a form of holy warfare to retake land taken by holy warfare (jihad). He closed by noting (I’m paraphrasing from memory) that the Muslims have a number of strengths: zeal, certitude, and demography. As for us, well, we have freedom. And freedom may yet win out.
