Diabetes Breakthrough

Kathryn et al, the JAMA study on diabetes is encouraging, but as usual, let’s be cautious. This issue is close to my heart (our 13-year-old son was diagnosed with Type I diabetes at age 9) so I was on the web checking this out at 6 a.m. Also checked with our endocrinologist. Turns out that they had to give these young people huge doses of chemotherapy, just like cancer patients, and tons of antibiotics, in order to do the treatment. Adult stem cells may yet hold hope for a cure, but we’re not there yet.
