How Did This Happen?? But It’s Great That It Did!!

Apparently the House of Representatives last night passed an amendment to a Department of Transportation/HUD appropriations bill that bans spending at DoT on promulgating regulations that discriminate on the basis of race, ethnicity, or sex.  The amendment, offered by Rep. Tim Walberg (R-Michigan), is aimed especially at affirmative action in government contracting, where DoT is one of the worst federal offenders.

It’s amazing that this happened; maybe there’s a catch.  If there is no catch, then I assume the other side was asleep at the switch, and that it will now try to undo what was done, either by another House vote or in the Senate or something.  But what a great opportunity for those who oppose preferences to demand that their representatives do the right thing!  And what a great opportunity—and test—for the Bush administration.

Exciting stuff!
