In All Seriousness

Yes, I have sympathy for Mrs. Craig. And, in my heart of hearts, I have some sympathy for Craig himself. His life is a mess. He’s making a laughingstock of himself — and his supporters. I think closeted gay men are caught in a terrible bind between their most primal desires and their moral beliefs. But, that is hardly a new dilemma for anyone (nor does it take us very far in judging either the desires or the beliefs).  I also believe that his alleged behavior — if true, and I think it is — is indefensible.

Lastly — and this is in response to some emailers –  I think conservatives get caught in an unfair bind. We’re supposed to be uptight, repressed, Comstocks. But if we actually have a sense of humor about these sorts of things, it’s proof that we’re insensitive “haters.” I don’t buy it. None of the jokes made around here are evidence of “hatred.” And they pale in comparison to the stuff we will surely hear from Jon Stewart, Colbert, Letterman, SNL et al. That conservatives don’t behave like liberal strawmen isn’t proof of conservative villainy, but of conservative humanity.
