Ambrose Bierce once defined diplomacy as “the patriotic art of lying for one’s country.” The phrase came to mind when I read President Bush’s toast to President Sarkozy of France: “I offer a toast to you–and to some of America’s oldest friends, the free people of France.”

Sarkozy may count as a new friend. Still, I hope that Bush is a Biercean–or that someone slips him a copy of this book.
