Golly, Mark, understanding the man, warts and all, is fine, not least for any light it may (or may not) shine on what he wrote, but “kind of imperative”? I dunno.

As for me, I’m still grateful for the story of Mailer’s first encounter with the great Tallulah Bankhead. It may be true. It made me laugh. Unfuhgeddable. Details here.
