Kathryn, it’s worth remembering, I think, that if anyone is in a position to choose to be a stay-at-home mum, it’s Julia Roberts. There are plenty of people who don’t have that choice – or, financially speaking, it’s an extremely difficult choice for them to opt for.

In this context (sort of), it’s interesting (at least for those worried, as I am not, by falling birth rates) to note that those countries in continental Europe with the highest birth rates (Sweden and France) are those with the most generous state-funded childcare arrangements. Draw what conclusions you will.
