The Democrats sort of box themselves in when they retreat to such a vague formulation, since conservatives can say that they, too, believe the Constitution protects privacy. Which is true: Several amendments protect aspects of privacy. But they can’t get more specific about what they mean and hold all the people who like the sound of the word “privacy.”
