Ramesh – I guess I disagree. Maybe it’s just a political or aesthetic thing. But I don’t like the written pledges. I think they cheapen the people who seem willing to dance to Grover’s tune. It doesn’t bother me so much with Congressional candidates or even Senators. But I think there’s something inherently unpresidential about the whole thing. If it’s a pledge you’re willing to make, your word should stand. If it’s a really easy pledge (i.e. vowing not to surrender to Canada) then signing such a pledge is frivolous. If it’s a hard call, you shouldn’t do it.
