Democracy Takes Another Hit in Turkey

The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) in Turkey likes to paint itself as reformist and democratic but, with its new monopoly on power, it has taken another step backward by lessening the separation of powers between the executive and judiciary, here.

When I was in Europe, a journalist acquainted with Turkey put it best when he described Prime Minister Erdogan as being uncomfortably close to Russian President Vladimir Putin on issues of democracy and permissible opposition.
