Before the Debate

Text

I ran into a top Democratic campaign aide leaving my hotel this morning.  I asked – matters of party aside – what he thought about the moderator and format of yesterday’s debate.  He smiled.  “Fantastic, really good,” he said.  A brief pause.  “And we’re still hoping for the Des Moines Register endorsement.”

I could be surprised, but all of the stories about Hillary Clinton and her apology for her campaign’s charges against Obama seem as unlikely to come up as similar topics during yesterday’s GOP debate.  And what are the candidates’ goals?  With the top three bunched closely, no one seems to think it is necessary to throw the long ball; rather, not screwing up will be a top priority.  And there’s no Dennis Kucinich.
