Re: Romney v. Huck on Crime

by Jonathan H. Adler

I have a few amateur thoughts about that new Romney ad hitting Huck on crime that K-Lo links to below. First, I think the ad makes sense. I would think that crime issues are more likely to cut into Huck’s base of support than attacks on taxes or even foreign policy. I assume this is the thinking of the Romney campaign as well. Second, as I’ve noted before, given the sheer number of pardons, commutations, etc. Huck issued as governor, there are bound to be many potentially embarrassing stories about pardons and clemencies that don’t look so great in hindsight. Dumond is only the tip of the iceberg. So, anything Romney (or any other candidate) does to encourage greater scrutiny of Huck on this issue would seem to make sense. Third, I would have thought that Giuliani was the logical candidate to go after Huckabee on this issue. That this attack was left to Romney suggests that the Giuliani campaign really is focusing on later contests.

A final thought: Does a Romney-Huck feud help my candidate, Fred? I hope so, but we’ll have to see.
