‘T’was Christmas evening / In the drunk tank...’

Against all expectations, Shane MacGowan — the single best one-man argument against drug legalization — will turn 50 tomorrow.

Provided he keeps it up, I’ll be seeing him perform with the Pogues in March at the 930 Club. It’s also a pleasant surprise to see he has something going for him in his life besides all the alcohol, the mastery of poetry and songwriting, and the best boozy, gurgling voice this side of London:

“I used to go to Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve, but if I don’t manage that I might go on Christmas Day. I go to Mass every now and then.”
