Andy, I’m not sure that U.S.support for the Northern Alliance in its war against the Soviets was tantamount to supporting the forces that evolved into al-Qaeda.
Incidently, I saw the film Charlie Wilson’s War this weekend. It was very entertaining — and very much made this point. I do not mean to imply that any film’s narrative should be regarded as accurate history. (Though most viewers no doubt do exactly that.)
The point is: Would Northern Alliance leader Ahmad Shah Massoud have turned against us had he not been murdered by al-Qaeda assassins (posing as journalists)? I think not — but I could be wrong.
