TR & Others

by Richard Brookhiser

Another interesting light on TR is cast by Henry Adams. I discuss it a bit in America’s First Dynasty, but it pops up in almost any biography of either man.
Adams’s personal view of his younger friend was a combination of curiosity, condescension, and resentment, often very amusingly expressed. Like TR, Adams accepted many things about his times that conservatives now deplore–statism, racism based on evolution. Unlike TR, he found these things depressing rather than exciting.
