What is Conservatism? One British Answer

Shortly before Christmas I remarked to Jonah in an e-mail that the British public doesn’t understand political philosophies as distinct from the agendas of the political parties.  Of late, for instance, majorities – often large ones – of poll respondents have said that it’s not clear what the Conservative Party stands for these days, something that the GOP might begin to find familiar.  In any event, Tim Montgomerie, founder of ConservativeHome, has started to draw up a series of statements answering the question, “what is conservatism?”  His initial list is here, and I suspect it could start a very useful discussion over there (and perhaps over here as well).
