The Corner

The one and only.

Jack Diggins

was one of the finest historians of (sigh) my generation. I’m sad to see him go. He was a masterful writer, a ruthlessly accurate researcher, and a true intellectual maverick. What more can you ask? Among his many memorable books was the one about the American response to Italian fascism, in which he exposed the shocking embrace of Mussolini by leading American ‘thinkers’ from one end of the political spectrum to the other. And he used that shocking fact to look more deeply into the American political soul.
