I first heard Paul Harvey when my family drove cross country to California, c. 1960, in our black Comet. When the highways straightened out to long lines, and every intersection was a right angle, he took over the air waves. What was impressive about his technique was his willingness to ignore the taboo against dead air. He left very long pauses in his spiels, without ever losing the arc of continuity. He showed his mastery of his medium by playing with its limitations. A natural conservative, a great talent.
