I enjoyed the right-leaning website Culture11 while it lasted — unfortunately, its lifespan was like one of those bugs that hatches, mates, and dies in just a few days. In the Washington Monthly, Charles Homans tells the inside story. I don’t agree with all of his assessments: He implies that conservative publications like NR and NRO don’t pay any attention to pop-culture phenomena such as King of the Hill, when in fact we publish articles about them. Also, Big Hollywood is an excellent website on movies with more serious criticism (such as John Nolte’s movie reviews) than Homans allows. Yet I’m convinced that conservatives must fight the culture wars on the terrain of pop culture rather than in remote hermitages where they talk in low voices amongst themselves. That’s what NR has tried to do with lists of conservative films and conservative rock songs. At the same time, we continue to find plenty of space for things like today’s article by Ralph Wood on Flannery O’Connor. Finally, Homans is absolutely correct to point out that conservatives are well served when they write for mainstream publications that aren’t overtly conservative. Sadly, Culture11 is no longer around to help them get there.
