When Thomas Paine said, These are the times that try men’s souls, he was talking about the people on the spot — Americans in late 1776. Iranians are now in the same spot.

But there is a trial for onlookers too. The smoky torch of realism has been passed back and forth from right to left so many times over the years that anyone can stink who is willing to hold it.
