Dr. Ernest W. Lefever, R.I.P.

It is with sadness that I pass along the news that Dr. Ernest W. Lefever, the founding president of the Ethics and Public Policy Center, died yesterday at the age of 89. Ernie (whom I came to know in recent years after I became EPPC’s president) was one of the nation’s premier scholars in ethics and politics and author or editor of more than twenty books. On a personal level, I am grateful to him for his kindness and generosity, and I enjoyed his sparkling wit, which is reflected in his last book, Liberating the Limerick, a collection of 230 limericks on a variety of topics, including nine that Ernie composed.

Dr. Lefever’s obituary is available here. May he rest in peace, and may his beloved wife Margaret and the entire Lefever family be comforted in this time of grief.
