The Bolsheviks made a huge study of the French Revolution. They wanted to know what had gone wrong with it, how it eventuated in Bonapartism, how they could prevent a Bonaparte from arising. They looked around their number, looking for some flamboyant, ambitious, clever, military genius. Obviously Trotsky was the one you had to fear Bonapartism from. Stalin? That dull plodder? Never.
