California’s Proposition 8 to Remain Unchallenged for Now
Activist groups pushing for a repeal of Proposition 8 have announced that they will not push for a vote in 2010. They will, instead, work to get signatures supporting repeal for 2012. Equality California cites forecasts of higher turnout among young voters in 2012 and donor preference in support of its decision. Implicitly, they acknowledge that they have not seen the sea change in public opinion they had expected (in fact, as Maggie Gallagher notes in the August 10 issue, the opposite has occurred). It will be interesting to see whether this longer-term campaign will abandon the “winning through intimidation” strategy that has so far characterized the anti-Proposition 8 effort. Since character is destiny, I suspect it will not entirely do so.
