Kathryn, I learned long ago never to put money on politics. And, were I considering it, readers have rushed to inform me that the only reason Romney ever won office in the Bay State was that he ran to the left of Kennedy, which he can’t do if he wants the GOP nomination. Okay.

As for your question about whether Kennedy put Obama over the top — well, he certainly helped give him credibility. But in the Democratic primaries, I would credit (blame) John Edwards, who divided the vote. In the general, I would credit (blame) John McCain, who was a weak candidate running a terrible campaign. Of all the things for which we might blame the departed Senator Kennedy, Obama’s election is low on the list. It was overdetermined.
