The Corner

The one and only.

Go, Joe!

Kudos to Joe Lieberman for his announcement that he will oppose a Democratic health bill if it includes a public option.  Harry Reid only made the announcement that he was including the public option yesterday afternoon, and it has already cost him the support of Olympia Snowe – the only Republican he had on board – and now Lieberman, an independent who generally votes with the Democrats.  These announcements lead one to wonder what kind of math Reid is using; he will need 60 votes to overcome a planned Republican filibuster, and so far his count has worsened by two.  It also indicates that Lieberman has not forgotten both the desertion by his Democratic colleagues in the Lieberman-Lamont Senate race in 2006, as well as the committee seat Democratic leaders took away in punishment for Lieberman backing his close friend John McCain in 2008.
