Audacity and Hope

Politico’s Mike Allen and Jim VandeHei report that the White House is planning to focus on deficit reduction in the State of the Union. The Politico headline pretty much says it all: “After spending binge, White House says it will focus on deficits”

For those who think this might be too early to discuss next year’s State of the Union, this is actually prime SOTU season. In my time at the White House, I found that much of Washington would go into holiday mode sometime in mid-November, but those working on the SOTU were entering the busiest time of the year. So the White House is right to be working on the speech early, but more than a little audacious in suddenly talking about deficits after spending, per Allen and VandeHei, “more money on new programs in nine months than Bill Clinton did in eight years.”
