Marc Ambinder thinks that Romney needs Huckabee to stay strong in Iowa so that he has an excuse for not trying to win the state’s caucuses. I think Ambinder is right that Romney, to succeed in 2012, needs to downplay Iowa, although we might not agree on the reasons. (I don’t think Romney’s Mormonism dooms him in Iowa, but a strong evangelical candidacy would doom him there.) I don’t think it would be so hard for him to skip the state. Romney can just come out against ethanol subsidies. It worked for McCain.
