Hatch Readies A ‘Stupak-Like Amendment’

As the Obamacare debate continues in the upper chamber, Senate Republicans are focused on rolling out amendments. Sen. Orrin Hatch (R., Utah) tells NRO that he will soon introduce a “Stupak-like amendment” that would prohibit the federal funding of elective abortions. “It will be similar to the amendment proposed by Congressman Stupak in the House, just without some of the House legislative language,” says Hatch. “It will hit all of the same issues, as well as adding conscience protections for doctors.” Hatch admits that passing the amendment will be an uphill battle, so he’s planning on co-sponsoring the amendment with an ally across the aisle, Sen. Ben Nelson (D., Neb.).
