‘One Cheer for Howard Dean’

Here’s my column today on the Left’s revolt on the individual mandate. I couldn’t do justice to the nuance, such as it is, of Dean’s position. He doesn’t want to kill the bill and start over exactly. He wants to pass something through reconciliation — but I think the effect would be to shelve the entire ramshackle effort for now and let the right and left continue to argue about what should constitute real reform. And that would be a very good thing.
