My Mercatus Center colleague Jerry Brito and I have spent the last few weeks cleaning up recipient report data from Recovery.gov and economic and political data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Census Bureau, GovTrack.us, and others, to compile a series of facts about stimulus spending. Our interest was simply to make use of the tens of thousands of stimulus recipient reports recently published on Recovery.gov and to put the aggregate information contained in those reports in a larger context.
We hope that this report will become part of a regular series as new recipient reports are released each quarter. Some of the questions we asked are: Is the money allocated based on political affiliation? It looks like it. Is the money allocated based of unemployment levels? Nope.
For more, go here. Also, the complete dataset used for this report is available to download at Mercatus.org, at the bottom of the report. Now, you can run your own regressions and look for additional stimulus facts that we might not have thought about.
That, Mr. President, is transparency.
