Obama in Massachusetts

by John J. Pitney, Jr.

If Scott Brown wins, Democrats may regret bringing President Obama into Massachusetts. They needed to shore up their working-class support, and he was hardly the right messenger. In the state’s 2008 Democratic primary, he carried voters wtih postgraduate study but lost every other educational group to Clinton. And that was before his famous comments about bitter working-class voters who cling to guns and religion. So on Sunday he went to a private university and reminded his listeners that he had lived in the state as a law student. And then he mocked Scott Brown’s truck, mentioning it six times

The Bureau of Labor Statistics counts 45,000 truck drivers in the commonwealth. Do you think the president got any of them to vote for Coakley?
