Campaign-Finance Ruling

The Supreme Court has just handed down an important ruling on campaign-finance reform in the case of Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, striking down parts of the McCain-Feingold law and partially reversing two earlier opinions that related to corporate contributions.

In the current issue of National Affairs, Bradley Smith (a campaign law expert and former Federal Election Commission member) has an essay laying out the issues at stake in that case, and how it relates to the larger campaign-finance debate.
