Unfit for Service?

The Paramount Theater in Oakland, Calif., is owned by the city and members of its board must be approved by the City Council. Lorenzo Hoopes, 96, has been a longtime (more than three decades) board member, but his reappointment has been threatened by strong opposition from gay-rights activists. They believe his substantial contribution to the Proposition 8 campaign disqualifies him from service. Mayor Ron Dellums has now put the reappointment on hold.
