Re: Robert Rector on Illegitimacy

Text

Great stuff. I’d like to add that illegitimacy figures vary dramatically by race and ethnicity, and there is an obvious pattern, which bears out Robert’s thesis: The groups that have higher illegitimacy rates are struggling more socioeconomically. For non-Hispanic whites, the percentage of births to unmarried women is 28.6 percent; for non-Hispanic blacks, 72.3 percent; for Native Americans, 65.8 percent; for Hispanics, 52.5 percent; and for Asians/Pacific Islanders, 16.9 percent. Not only do they have the lowest percentage of out-of-wedlock births, but they are the only group whose percentage did not increase from 2007.
