As a fan of both Peter and Roger I’m edified by both of their points of view. But getting back to the Arizona case, is it really so crazy for cops to take the fact that a given person is Hispanic into account? I’m not arguing that anyone should be stopped or singled out simply because of their ethnicity or skin color. I don’t know anyone who thinks that would be right, wise, constitutional or moral. But given the fact that we don’t have an illegal immigration problem with Kenya or Sweden while we do have one with Mexico, I’m at a loss as to why a cop shouldn’t be able to take into account the fact that a given person appears to be Mexican and, say, can’t speak English when trying to figure out if he’s here illegally. If that’s profiling, then I’m for profiling.
