Lynne Stewart’s Sentence Increased to Ten Years

Text

New York 1 is reporting. It’s close to a four-fold increase over the appalling 28-month sentence originally imposed on her conviction for material support to terrorism (i.e., helping the Blind Sheikh, Omar Abdel Rahman, pass messages to his ruthless Egyptian terrorist organization).

A federal appeals court had upheld her conviction but remanded the case back to the lower court for reconsideration of the ridiculous sentence. She faced up to 30 years’ imprisonment, and prosecutors urged the judge to set a 15-year term. He went with 10. Stewart is 70 years old, NY1 is quick to add – but what they don’t tell you is that she was permitted to remain free on bail for several years, through indictment, trial, conviction, sentencing, and appeals.
