Pelosi Calls for Investigation of Mosque Opposition

Text

In an interview with KCBS radio, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) yesterday called for a congressional investigation into opposition to the Cordoba House:

“There is no question there is a concerted effort to make this a political issue by some. And I join those who have called for looking into how is this opposition to the mosque being funded,” she said. “How is this being ginned up that here we are talking about Treasure Island, something we’ve been working on for decades, something of great interest to our community as we go forward to an election about the future of our country and two of the first three questions are about a zoning issue in New York City.”

The “Treasure Island” to which Pelosi testily refers is a former Navy base in the middle of San Francisco Bay which is in the process of being turned over to the city for redevelopment into an 8000-home “ecotopia” — a Brave, New World with wind- and solar-powered skyscrapers, where Americans, presumably, can be investigated by Congress because they share an opinion with too many of their countrymen for it to be anything but a seditious conspiracy.

Let’s get this woman out of the Speakership in November — while we still can.

UPDATE: Pelosi has issued a non-clarifying clarification to WaPo’s Greg Sargent (emphasis his):

“The freedom of religion is a Constitutional right. Where a place of worship is located is a local decision.

“I support the statement made by the Interfaith Alliance that ‘We agree with the ADL that there is a need for transparency about who is funding the effort to build this Islamic center. At the same time, we should also ask who is funding the attacks against the construction of the center.’

This passive-voice ‘questions should be asked’ business is unhelpful. Who’s going to ask them? Even if we give Madam Speaker the benefit of the doubt and understand her comments as a vague, undercooked sentiment that ‘something must be done about this!’ then what we’re left with is a Speaker of the House — elected by three-quarters of four-fifths of San Francisco — who thinks the opinion of 70 percent of Americans was bought and paid for by nefarious PAC money from the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy.
