You really should. There was, in tonight’s sharply written and breathtakingly acted episode, exactly one (spectral) false note, near the end; which only serves to demonstrate, by contrast, how lucky we are to have a series that has so few of them. Among my minor complaints over the past few seasons have been that one important female character is a plucky and resourceful Girl Scout, to the point of being unbearably cloying; and that the show’s treatment of heavy drinking is often too close to pure romanticization. Both of those problems were taken care of tonight, and then some. (One especially great moment in this episode combines sensitive acting with a true writer’s insight: A character receives bad news by telephone, and is very saddened, but seems to have his emotions under control. Then he suddenly notices that someone is watching him, someone he cares about — and that unexpected connection with another person causes him to burst into tears. A lot of truth in that couple of seconds.)
