Publishing the Right

Conservatism must be hot again in the publishing world. This just in:

New York, NY (September 27, 2010)–Jonathan Burnham, Senior Vice President and Publisher of Harper, announced today a new line of conservative books, named Broadside  Books.  Adam Bellow, Vice President and Executive Editor, will be the Editorial Director of Broadside Books, which will launch in January 2011.

Broadside Books will leverage Harper’s already strong position in the conservative market while attracting new voices as well as established authors reflecting the full range of conservative viewpoints.  Under Bellow’s direction the line will reflect a distinctive editorial vision that projects an attitude of forward engagement with the war of ideas, both between right and left and within the conservative movement.

Broadside will publish across a wide spectrum of nonfiction genres –political and philosophical critiques of liberalism, revisionist histories investigative journalism, issue-focused books by leading political figures, political memoirs, and books that challenge or rethink various aspects of conservatism itself.  Broadside will also publish a lively list of original paperbacks and e-books, as a way of getting out new ideas and timely arguments more quickly and showcasing young or emerging writers.

“I look forward to building a new platform for the conservative voice at HarperCollins,” said Bellow. “Indeed, I believe we are on the verge of an explosion of intellectual creativity on the right.  A whole new generation of conservative thinkers is coming up, very different in some respects from their elders.  What’s more, the Tea Party is shaking up the conservative intellectual establishment just as it has done with the political establishment. Broadside aims to be the place where that new ferment can be given free rein using a variety of print and digital media.”
